The Vision of Children continues to implement its specialized computer monitor system for visually impaired students in learning centers nationwide. VOC developed the system in response to feedback from parents and teachers. They reported that visually impaired students lean excessively close to the monitor to see it clearly, which results in eye and muscle strain and hinders students' ability to learn computer skills effectively.

| A 19' LCD flat-screen monitor with a specialized articulated arm, the system allows users to manually adjust the monitor to their optimal viewing distance. In many cases, students prefer to use the system without magnification software because they can work more comprehensively with standard computer programs.
Teacher Pascual Talamantes, who himself is visually impaired, describes this benefit best. “It is not easy to grasp the contents of an entire web page while viewing it through a software ‘magnifier,’ especially with some of the information in movement as is so popular today. At the instant the student passes the ‘magnifier’ over that portion of the page, the information may be temporarily invisible.”

| VOC has implemented this system in over 55 learning centers with great results:
- “Students using this system increase their computer skills by 50% within a few months.” Gary Sandvik, teacher, Santa Fe Christian School, Solana Beach, CA
- “Sometimes the best solution is the simplest. Instead of contorting your body into awkwardly painful positions in order to get closer to the display, isn’t more logical to bring the display closer to the viewer... It sure makes sense to me!” Pascual Talamantes, visually-impaired teacher, Sweetwater Union High School District, San Diego, CA
- “My students have benefited tremendously from this innovative technology. They have more confidence and as a result have more fun with their computer studies.” Ken Collard, teacher, Mueller Elementary, Chula Vista, CA Order and grant application information

| Schools may purchase monitor system(s) at cost. Due to the generosity of several foundations, The Vision of Children may donate monitor systems to schools that show both a physical need (that serve visually impaired students) and a financial need (are unable to pay for the equipment alone). If your school has a need for the equipment, please e-mail Jolene Leonard at jleonard@visionofchildren.org for a donation application.
